Photography: Théâtre de la Mode

a

During the shortages of World War II haute couture fashion shows were a luxury in which no one could consider indulging. A few creative minds came up with an alternative...

"The idea for the Theatre de la Mode came from Robert Ricci, son of Nina, and the then head of the Chambre Syndicale, which was enlisted by Entraide Francaise to help raise funds for their work. Like the rest of Europe, Paris was suffering from severe shortages, and fabric was especially hard to come by. Rather than staging ‘real life’ fashion shows, which would have been almost impossible in these circumstances, the Chambre Syndicale decided to do everything in miniature, using mannequins on a 1:3 scale. This harked back to the old practice of sending dolls dressed in miniature versions of outfits to faraway buyers.

Made from wire (a salvaged material), with white, unpainted plaster heads, the mannequins were designed by Eliane Bonabel, an illustrator, and Joan Rebull, a Spanish sculptor. Fifty three design houses, including such well known names as Schiaparelli, Fath, Hermes, Ricci, Balenciaga, Worth, Lelong, Carven and Madame Gres, were given the task of creating up to five outfits each. The only difference between these clothes and those made for real people, was in their size; they had proper linings, closures, buttons and trimmings. Many were hand beaded, and designers often provided miniature foundation garments to go underneath. The couturiers were not the only artists who were involved. The mannequins’ wigs were all professionally made and styled, and each one wore a pair of beautifully scaled down shoes. Jewellery, little gloves, hats, purses, belts, and even little powder compacts had to be made."

Here we are back in Los Angeles on a day when Tom and I walked around the Frank Gehry desinged Walt Disney Concert Hall. The place makes a pretty unique and imposing silhouette against the sky. You may be able to recognize it since it's used in a lot of movies and commercials. There was also an Anthropologie catalog shot here, I think last year.

I've had this dress in my closet for ages but hadn't ever found an appropriate day to wear it. It's one of those things that may sound like a good idea... a short sleeved sweater dress. But on most days when it's cool enough to wear a sweater, it's too cool for short sleeves and when it's warm enough for short sleeves, it's too hot for a sweater. Such a dilemma, I know. Anway, this perfectly lovely day in LA turned out to be just the right day.

Wednesday Eye Candy

It's Wednesday. We've been preparing some great items for the website, spanning from the 1740s to the 1980s. Quite the time range. Plus we have a lot of new information to add to our History of  Louisville Department Stores. So it's been a productive week, with more to come. We have a buying call tomorrow plus a promising auction this weekend. So today, a simple post with some eye candy, the

Olive & Orange AW11

While we're talking about Orla Kiely we may as well talk about their diffusion line, Olive & Orange. I just spent the last half hour ogling every since piece in their fall collection. As much as I love the Orla line, I think I might lean towards this one if I had to pick just one. Maybe it's the socks with oxfords combo that's stealing my heart? I think I might have to make my mission to get my hands on that camel coat. The only problem is I'm not sure who carries this stuff online. Any suggestions?

Continuing the the never ending stream of Fall/Winter collections that are making the rounds is Orla Kiely. It's no surprise that I'd include it here since I love it every single season. This fall's homage to 60s mod is retro perfection. I love how this collection always manages to walk the line between modern and vintage and never comes out looking like a costume. If you have a moment to watch the quirky-creepy video, I highly recommend it. It's always nice to see the clothes in action and not just in a still shot. Here are some of my favorite looks...

Mad Men & Women

a

Mid-month the Mad Men inspired collection designed in collaboration with Janie Bryant will debut in Banana Republic stores. I'm pretty much starved of anything Mad Men related these days since the show has been postponed until next year. Shooting finally begins this week! It's been way too long since I've seen those characters. I think there are some really adorable pieces in this collection but what I really love are the men's looks. Those are some seriously dapper dudes. Tom, I think it might be time to buy you a suit!

This weekend Tom and I went to visit our friends who live just on the PA/Delaware border on the loveliest plot of land. They have a garden full of fresh veggies, trails running through the woods and lots of animals running around. I spend a bit of time playing with their newest additions, a five month of Rottweiler puppy and two rescued Great Pyrenees puppies. Needless to day I was in puppy heaven. There was also a coop of Rhode Island hens and I came home with a dozen fresh eggs. We grilled quesadillas and drank Dos Equis and watched the toads come out when the sun went down. It was pretty much perfection. It almost made we want to give up city life for a little bit of the country.
