Let's Talk 50s.

So let's talk. The 1950s have been in demand for quite some time amongst the vintage people. I saw it really get going in the late 70s and early 1980s, when longer fuller skirts came back in style, along with belted waists. Plus it was 30 years old then, ( my parents wore this!) and that's old enough for nostalgia, i.e. Grease.  And then there's James Dean. And Elvis. And rockabilly. And

The Little White Blouse

The 'little white blouse', perhaps as perfect and indispensable as the 'little black dress'. A break in the clouds finally gave me the opportunity to photograph a recent haul of white blouses for the shop, so all these will be in the SHOP soon!

Raquelle

a

The story of Raquelle begins, "The Raquelle collection was born on a breezy, sunny, summer morning."  This seems terribly appropriate since the clothes are begging to be worn on just such a day.  The line was created in 2008, almost by accident after a stranger offered to order three dresses like the one the designer was wearing and had designed for herself.

I have Alabama in August on my mind every day  right now as we prepare for our trip and have a packing list that reads something like this:  breezy dresses, loose blouses, comfortable shorts.  It would be nice if something from this collection would find its way into my suitcase.

Young Frankk

b

These summery images from Young Frankk's lookbook make me want to pack up and head to the boardwalk.  It's been legitimately hot and humid this week and a cool ocean breeze would be a nice relief.  I know I'm supposed to be looking at the jewelry in these shots (and I am), but what I really end up wanting  are the loose, breezy outfits.

Bustles, and Vests and Hats, Oh My!

It's such a treat here to get to handle wonderful antique fashions. I never get tired of beautiful things, whether it's the construction, the fabric or the color. Getting to enjoy the reminders of the past and experience them is what has kept me going in this business for 21 years. I am glad I enjoy this. So many of the sellers I knew when I came into this business are gone now. Much less

Is it possible to get enough of the 1920s? Not Really.

We added a lot of new inventory to Past Perfect Vintage yesterday. It was quite a day. I'm going to go a bit out of historical order and show you the 1920s additions first. I'll come back to the Victorian and Edwardian pieces on Friday. I think this is the best cross section of 1920s fashions we've been able to offer in quite a while. Dresses, an evening wrap, hats and purses, all from two

Etsy Update: Summer

Lots of summer favorites have just been added to the Etsy shop.  I want to pack up all of these finds and head straight for the beach!  All available now...

Nadia Tarr

I'm certain one of these Nadia Tarr maxi dresses has to be mine, HAS to! Trouble is, which one?! But guess what? These also come in midi & mini length! Brilliant right? Right! Also available from Nadia Tarr are vintage dresses, interesting! I'm pretty sure Nadia Tarr is a woman after my own little heart.

Wren x Minnetonka

I'm never quite sure if I want to buy a pair of Minnetonkas or not.  They seem so comfortable and easy to wear, but for one reason or another, I've never pulled the trigger on buying a pair.  Now that they've teamed up with Wren for a special collection, I may have to take another look.

Kickstarter: The Black Belt of Alabama

OK, here we go... remember last week when I mentioned Tom and I spent a day in NYC and visited the Kickstarter offices?  Well, this is what we were working on; a book project for our next road trip through Alabama!  As you probably already know, I'm a born and raised 'Bama girl.  I've since lived in California and now Pennsylvania, but a large part of my heart will always reside in that southern state.

If you'd like to check out more details, you can read all about it on the Kickstarter project page.   Our plans are to spend about 10 days driving through the Black Belt region of Alabama (the region encompasses the central counties of the state, from east to west).  We'll stop along the way at any spot that catches our interest, photographing whatever landscapes, structures or people we discover.  We're excited to see where this adventure takes us!

Above you can see the video we posted telling you a little more about the project (why is it so hard to watch oneself in motion?  I swear I don't sound like that - but I guess I do).  And on the project page, you can read about the rewards we're offering;  everything from a digital PDF of the book, to signed & numbered printed copies, postcards, giclée prints and loads more!

If you're interested in pitching in or just following along, I'll be posting updates here as we get ready for our road trip.  Thank you so much for checking this out and for all of your support!

Renee Perle | muse

“Tall, slim, a long neck, a shining lock of hair caressing her mouth. I see the reflection of Renee’s beauty in women’s eyes and men’s glances…Beside her, other women look like farm girls.
– Lartigue’s Diary: Paris, March 10, 1930

Muse & girlfriend to photographer, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Renee Perle was a Romanian model living in Paris in the late 1920s, early 1930s with the quintessential jazz age look- lean, mysterious, smouldering and arrestingly gorgeous. I particularly love how she sports the simplest of garments (a t-shirt, a tank top!) and elevates them entirely. I also love her arm laden with thin bangles, gonna have to try that...

Madewell Fall 2013

Untitled-1

Yesterday Tom and I took his niece to New York City for the day to visit her cousin (another niece).  We met for lunch at Calexico then took a tour of the Kickstarter office where the Manhattan dwelling niece works.  We were partially there to follow up on an upcoming Kickstarter project that Tom and I are working on (more on that soon...) and also to hang out in the city and do a lot of nothing in particular.  The best kind of day.

Along the way, we stopped into the Madewell store at Broadway and Broome.  Last time we were there, the crowd inside had me running for the exit before I could make it up the staircase.  Luckily a Tuesday afternoon visit meant a much smaller crowd and room to breathe.  I'm always surprised at the pieces that catch my eye in the store verses the ones I like online.  I guess that says a lot about the styling of the collections online.

I didn't spy any fall pieces in the stores yet (thank goodness - it's too early) but I came home and looked it up online.  The review I read stated the collection is full of classic pieces that you probably already have in your closet and demonstrates new ways to pair things up.  That may be true, as I haven't seen anything yet that makes me feel like I have to have it.  I do feel like I could dig around in my closet (or the thrift store) and find something similar to put together these looks.  But then again, Madewell always has a way of stocking something that catches my eye. I'm sure something will find its way into my closet.

One Hundred Years of Ladies Hair Combs

I decided to follow up the fan montage post with the even more epic " Hair Combs I Have Known".

This is almost, but not quite all, the hair combs and pins I collected over the years. A few aren't here, but just a few. Most of these are celluloid, although tortoiseshell and horn represented too.The dates run from 1820s to the 1920s.  I wish I could say there was some over riding theme to
