The Flapper Bride

vintage 1920s Diaphanous Star dress

vintage 1920s Nymph of Nysa headpiece
vintage 1930s Shimmer Satin heels
A complete 1920s bride ensemble! Quite possibly one of the most gorgeous bride-worthy 1920s beaded dresses I have ever laid my hands on is now in the shop. And a very rare 1920s bridal headpiece; I had never seen one of these in person until now, and I am not sure I will ever see one again. All three pieces are now in the SHOP.

More London

london

Oh, dreary and grey London!  How we loved you.  It's true.  The grey skies and mist in the air couldn't have dampened our spirits.  We wandered through the streets, took a tour of the Thames, stood in awe of the Eye (but didn't take a ride), listened to Big Ben strike five o'clock and bundled up against the chill.  After spending some time along the river we wandered through Picadilly Circus, stopping along the way for some amazing Indian food.  Then we walked down Shaftesbury Avenue (insert Harry Potter reference here).  We arrived back in Camden late and had to (had to) stop for a late night snack of cheese fries & milkshakes;  vanilla for Tom & Nutella for me.

flaxin' & relaxin'

Ok, I wasn't relaxin', I was working at the shop, but I could not resist the cheesy title, it was too easy. There isn't any air conditioning in the shop so basically I've been wearing either very comfortable clothing or very little clothing. I have always had a soft spot for Flax clothing, it's like more affordable Eileen Fisher clothing (do I go on about Eileen Fisher too much? Perhaps. There IS a hip 60 year old woman with a long gray braid stuck inside me after all...). When I thrift something Flax I get pretty dang excited, when I found this skirt it came with a giant tunic. I love how Flax pieces are all sort of giant sized, this skirt (& the accompanying tunic) are size small, but pretty much the biggest size smalls ever. Just slouchy, comfy, linen clothing - great for a day mending, photographing & measuring garments.

gray t-shirt - American Apparel
Flax skirt - thrifted
braided leather sandals - thrifted
modernist necklace - thrifted

And now, today's pretty for the hat lovers

Midsummer Pretty | a shop update

The shop has been updated this morning with soft, pretty, summery pieces. I'll admit that I only included half of the pieces that I had originally planned, the truth is I just couldn't bear to add so much "pretty" to the shop at once, I felt I had better space it out a bit! So yeah, that means an update as pretty as this is on the not so distant horizon...

sneak peek | double chiffon

What's better than an airy 1950s silk chiffon dress? Oh, well, TWO airy 1950s chiffon dresses, of course!
These two will be in the shop this week.

G. Howard Hodge, American Milliner

Another day lost to research, but here is the result.

G. Howard Hodge

G. Howard Hodge was one of the best known American milliners of the mid 20th Century. Born in Woodland,Ca. outside of Sacramento in 1891, he was the son of a farmer turned grocer. As a teenager, he moved on to San Francisco, working as a stock clerk at Mueller and Rans millinery factory. Prior to WWI, he had become

a little (literally) something different

For as long as I have been running the shop I have wanted to carry earrings, but I could never figure out a way to shoot them that I liked enough. The reign of indecision is now over! Let there be earrings in the Dear Golden shop! I admit that my taste (and thusly, the "shop's taste") is jewelry is a bit less feminine than most of the garments in the Dear Golden shop, but if you like cool & somewhat simple jewelry then I think you'll like the pieces that are headed to the shop.

The first four pair are already in the shop!
